Twelve days in, and we got the news we’d been waiting for: ammonia is dropping!

Why This Matters

The ammonia dropping from 0.5 to 0.25 ppm is the first real movement we’ve seen in the cycle. It means the ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) are now established and actively consuming ammonia faster than the soil produces it.

This is the first milestone in cycling. The bacteria colony has reached critical mass.

Combined with our plants absorbing ammonia directly, we’re now removing it from two sources. The system is working.

Decision Time: Early Nerite Addition?

With ammonia at a safe 0.25 ppm and nitrite low, we started debating: should we add our Nerite snails early?

Arguments for:

  • Current parameters are safe for hardy snails
  • The biofilm has built up nicely—they’d have plenty to eat
  • They can help with cleanup during cycling

Arguments against:

  • Nitrite could still spike (common in coming days)
  • Traditional advice says wait until fully cycled
  • Why risk it?

We decided to wait one more test. If parameters stay stable, we’ll consider adding them at Day 13-14.

Plant Growth Accelerating

The difference from Day 10 is visible. The Water Wisteria is now clearly taller. The Dwarf Sag runners are spreading across the foreground. Even the recovering Crypts are showing more new leaf growth.

The ecosystem is maturing. We can feel it.

Temperature Check

Still holding steady at 75°F. The heater is doing its job without intervention. This consistency is important—fluctuating temperatures stress both bacteria and future livestock.
