A full week since setup, and the tank is looking more established every day. The water is clear, the plants are settling in, and the nitrogen cycle is progressing exactly as expected.

Analysis

The stable readings are actually great news. In a traditional cycle, you’d expect ammonia to spike significantly before bacteria catch up. Our heavy planting is keeping ammonia low by absorbing it directly.

The pH rose slightly to 7.6, which is within normal range. Our coral hardscape might be contributing a small amount of buffering.

The key indicator: nitrite is present and stable. This means ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) are established and working. We’re watching the nitrogen cycle in action.

Plant Check

One week in, we’re seeing the first signs of adaptation:

Winners:

  • Water Wisteria: Growing visibly! Some stems added an inch or more
  • Dwarf Sagittaria: Rooting in well, looking established
  • Red Root Floaters: Multiplying already

Adjusting:

  • Amazon Swords: A few older leaves yellowing (normal transition)
  • Cryptocoryne: Beginning the infamous “crypt melt” - some leaves dissolving

Java Fern: Looking the same. Java Fern is slow-growing and basically bulletproof, so no news is good news.

About Crypt Melt

The Cryptocoryne melt is completely expected and actually a sign they’re alive. Here’s what happens:

  1. Crypts are grown in nurseries under specific conditions
  2. When moved to your tank, conditions change dramatically
  3. The plant abandons its existing leaves (which aren’t suited to new conditions)
  4. New leaves grow adapted to your specific water

It looks alarming—leaves literally dissolving—but the crown and roots are fine. In 2-3 weeks, we should see new growth emerging.

The Biofilm Grows

The glass film we noticed on Day 3 has thickened. There’s also a layer forming on the sand surface and driftwood. This “gross” stuff is actually a sign of a healthy, maturing ecosystem.

Once we add our Nerite snails, they’ll feast on this biofilm. But for now, we’re letting it develop.

Still No Action Needed

With parameters in safe ranges, we’re staying hands-off. The temptation to “help” is strong, but intervention at this stage usually does more harm than good.

Our only tasks:

  • Monitor temperature (holding steady at 75°F)
  • Test again in 3-4 days
  • Remove any completely dead plant leaves
  • Wait

The cycle continues.
