Three days of staring at a cloudy tank. Three days of resisting the urge to “fix” things. Three days of wondering if we did everything right.

Today we finally got to test the water, and the results were… interesting.

The First Test Results

What This Tells Us

In a traditional fishless cycle, you’d expect ammonia to be higher and nitrite to be zero at this point. But we’re seeing something different—low ammonia and trace nitrite already.

This suggests our heavy planting might be working exactly as Diana Walstad described. The plants are absorbing ammonia before it can accumulate, and some bacteria are already converting what’s left to nitrite.

Could we be witnessing the beginning of a “silent cycle”? It’s too early to tell, but the signs are promising.

Tank Observations

The water clarity improved dramatically overnight. Still not crystal clear, but we can now see all the plants clearly. Some observations:

  • Water Wisteria: Standing upright, looking healthy
  • Amazon Swords: Leaves slightly droopy (shipping stress?)
  • Crypts: One or two leaves starting to yellow (melt beginning?)
  • Dwarf Sag: Mostly staying planted, a few floaters
  • Red Root Floaters: Spreading across the surface nicely
  • Java Fern: Looking stable on the coral

The light is on 8 hours a day. Temperature is holding steady at 75°F.

What’s Growing On the Glass?

We noticed a thin film on the glass—biofilm. This is actually a good sign. It means bacteria and microorganisms are colonizing surfaces, which is exactly what needs to happen for the cycle to progress.

In a few weeks, this biofilm will be food for our Nerite snails.

Action Items

None! The key to Walstad is patience. With these numbers, we don’t need to do anything except:

  • Continue monitoring temperature
  • Test again in 3-4 days
  • Resist the urge to mess with things

The ecosystem is establishing itself. Our job is to get out of the way.
