With our equipment ordered and cycling research complete, we faced the most exciting decision yet: which plants would call our tank home?
The Walstad method demands heavy planting from day one. This isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about biology. Plants are your filtration system, your ammonia absorbers, your algae competitors. Skimp on plants, and you’re fighting an uphill battle.
We set out to fill every zone of our tank: foreground, midground, background, and surface.
Our Plant Selection Philosophy
We had three criteria:
- Beginner-friendly - We wanted plants that would forgive our inevitable mistakes
- Fast-growing - Quick growth means quick nutrient absorption
- Variety - Different textures, colors, and heights for visual interest
After hours of research (and way too many tabs open), we landed on six species totaling 41-47 plants.
The Final Plant List
Foreground: Dwarf Sagittaria (15 plants)
These grass-like plants create a carpet across the front of the tank. They’re hardy, spread via runners, and don’t need CO2 injection. Within a few months, they should fill in the entire foreground.
Why we chose it: The “lawn” effect is classic, and dwarf sag is famously hard to kill.
Background: Amazon Sword (2 plants) + Water Wisteria (9-15 stems)
For our tall background plants, we went with two Amazon Swords as focal points. These are the “statement pieces”—they can grow 12-16 inches tall with large, dramatic leaves.
Between and around the swords, we planted Water Wisteria. This feathery plant grows fast, absorbs tons of nutrients, and creates that lush jungle look we were after.
Why we chose them: Amazon Swords are iconic centerpieces. Water Wisteria is a nutrient vacuum that will help prevent algae during cycling.
Midground: Cryptocoryne wendtii (6 plants) + Java Fern (3 pieces)
The midground is where texture gets interesting. Cryptocoryne wendtii has broad, wavy leaves in shades of green and bronze. Java Fern adds unique texture with its thick, textured fronds.
One important note: Java Fern can’t be planted in substrate. Its rhizome needs to be attached to hardscape (driftwood or rocks). We plan to tie ours to our coral centerpiece.
Why we chose them: Crypts are low-maintenance once established, and Java Fern grows in almost any conditions.
Floating: Red Root Floaters (12-15 plants)
Floating plants serve multiple purposes:
- Absorb nutrients directly from the water column
- Provide shade (some fish prefer it)
- Add visual interest at the surface
- Their dangling roots look beautiful from below
Red Root Floaters have round, lily-pad-like leaves and (when healthy) display gorgeous red roots and even pink/red leaf coloration.
Why we chose them: They’re beautiful and functional, plus they multiply quickly—free plants!
The Layout Plan
We mapped out exact positions for every plant:

The layout is optimized for viewing from the front and right side (the left and back have black backgrounds). Our primary focal points are positioned in the right-center area where they’re visible from multiple angles.

Not cheap, but this is the foundation of the entire ecosystem. You can save money on equipment in a Walstad tank, but you can’t skimp on plants.
Preparing for Arrival
With our order placed, we had a few days to prepare:
- Research how to plant each species (substrate depth, crown placement, etc.)
- Prepare tools: tweezers, scissors, spray bottle
- Set up a temporary holding container for the plants if we needed extra time
- Re-read the Walstad planting guides one more time
The anticipation was real. In a few days, we’d transform an empty glass box into an underwater forest.
